More students and professionals are using AI as a study aid, and the results split sharply. Some improve; some quietly get worse. The dividing line is whether you ask the model for the answer or for the process.
The governing principle
Pasting a problem and receiving a solution feels efficient and leaves nothing behind. Redirect the same tool toward process and it becomes a tutor:

Technique 1: two-level explanation
For an unfamiliar concept, start with explain this as if to a twelve-year-old. Once it lands, follow with now restate it at exam-answer level. Hearing the same idea at two depths substantially improves retention.
The reverse is stronger still: explain the concept to the model yourself and ask it to correct you. This is the Feynman technique, and an AI is close to an ideal partner for it — endlessly patient and available.
Technique 2: build your own problem set
Paste your notes or a chapter summary and ask for five multiple-choice and two short-answer questions with the answers withheld. When you get one wrong, follow with explain why that distractor was tempting.
Then the highest-value request: analyze the types I keep getting wrong and generate more of those. No commercial workbook is targeted to your specific weaknesses.
Technique 3: language practice without embarrassment
- Conversation: You are a cafe server. Have an ordering conversation with me in English, and collect corrections until the end rather than interrupting. Uninterrupted flow matters.
- Writing: do not just take the correction — ask what rule made that change necessary.
- Level setting: stating your level up front prevents the frustration that ends practice sessions.
- Nuance: compare two expressions with example sentences. Dictionaries handle this poorly.
Technique 4: study planning that adapts
I have four weeks until the exam and can study two hours a day. The subject is X and my weak area is Y. Build a weekly plan. I will report progress each Sunday so you can adjust it.
The reporting loop is what makes this more than a static schedule.
What to watch out for
- Verify facts: models get dates, names and formulas wrong. Confirm anything exam-relevant against your textbook.
- Do not submit generated work: it may violate academic policy, and more importantly it builds nothing.
- Finish by hand: whatever you studied with AI, write the final summary yourself.
- Distrust the feeling of ease: understanding and being able to explain are different. Always test with the second.
An AI tutor is patient, always available, and never annoyed by a repeated question. It becomes a terrible tutor the moment it starts doing the work. Ask for the process, not the answer.
