Your child used AI to do their homework. Is that cheating to punish, or a skill to teach? Banning it outright feels unrealistic; allowing it without limits feels irresponsible. Most parents land somewhere uncomfortable in between.
This guide does not claim a single right answer. It lays out the distinction schools and families are converging on, and what to agree by age.
Why prohibition does not hold
AI is already embedded in search, translation and document tools. By the time today children are adults it is likely to be as unremarkable as electricity.
So the question shifts from whether they use it to how we teach them to use it — closer to teaching road rules and a helmet than to withholding the bicycle.
The distinction that works: doing it for you vs. helping you
This framing communicates well to children:

Younger primary: use it together
Sit beside them rather than handing over the device. Discussing why a particular answer appeared is the point. The single concept to plant at this stage: this is sometimes wrong.
Older primary to middle school: set the rules together
They will start using it independently. Agree household rules jointly — rules set together are followed far more reliably than rules announced:
- If you used AI on homework, say how you used it. Not hiding it is the core rule.
- No personal information: name, school, address, photos.
- Anything submitted must be rewritten in your own words.
- School policy, where it exists, overrides household rules.
High school and beyond: build verification skill
The priority becomes the ability to doubt and check. Assign them to find the source for something AI told them. Discovering a fabricated paper or invented statistic first-hand is the most durable lesson available.
Common parental concerns
Will this weaken their thinking?
A reasonable worry. The risk lies in taking output without engaging, not in the tool. The same concern accompanied calculators, and it proved manageable once the order was fixed: understand the principle, then use the aid.
Practical rule for the household: attempt it yourself first, then have AI review it. Order alone resolves most of the concern.
Where exactly is the line on cheating?
Standards differ by school, so check the school policy first. If none exists, asking the teacher directly is both the clearest route and a good example to set.
What about harmful content?
Most services provide age settings and safety filters, though none are perfect. For younger children, use in a shared room remains the most effective control.
Activities worth trying at home
- Spot the error: ask the model about a subject your child knows well and hunt for mistakes. Excellent critical-thinking practice.
- Teach the AI: your child explains a lesson and asks to be corrected.
- Vary the question: experiment with how rephrasing changes the answer, which builds prompting intuition naturally.
The point
What matters is not whether they use AI but whether they can judge for themselves. Set rules together, keep it out in the open, and hold the order of attempt-then-review.
One more thing: use it yourself first. Children can tell the difference between advice from someone who has used the tool and someone who has not.
